Back from holiday

Two weeks in Portugal and everything in the green house has survived thanks to Debbie (& Kids) watering while away. Few lettuces have gone to seed in the raised bed but apart from that all is well.

Now got some ripe beefsteak tomatoes and plenty of chillis - wasn't expecting much from the chilli plants this year as the weather was so awful early on, but looks like I'll be picking them in a couple of weeks.

Big Tomatoes

Big Tomatoes
These are my marmande tomatoes, sowed them way back at the end of March, took much longer to germinate than the other varieties of tomato I sowed. Kept my two strongest plants in the greenhouse and have fed with tomorite every 2 or 3 days. I pinched out the growing tip leaving after 3 trusses of flowers so that they would put all their energy into growing fruit. Just a case of waiting for them to show signs of ripening.

In other tomato related news my 4 moneymaker tomato plants have been producing ripe tomatoes for a couple of weeks now, obviously a lot smaller than these. Moneymaker have medium to small sized fruit - Note to self grow 2 money maker, 2 Ailsa craig and 2 beefsteak next year to get a full size range of tomatoes.

Harvest begins in earnest

Harvesting tomatoes (money maker), lettuce, onions (red baron), beetroot (boltardy), courgette (defender), French beans (blue lake) carrots (nantes) and cucumber (burpless tasty green).

Didn't think I'd get any chillis this year as they had such a poor start but am beginning to see a few appear at last. Got to get them into bigger pots this weekend, they are drying out very quickly in the hot weather. Beefsteak tomatoes are looking really good, big and round though still very green.

Latest in the raised bed

Latest in the raised bed
Got plenty of lettuce ready to harvest and cut my first courgette. From left to right in the picture, dwarf french beans, spring onions, endive, lollo rosso lettuce, mixed row of cos and little gem lettuce, half a row of beetroot and half a row of swede, onions and finally two rows of carrots.

Onions have take a bit of a battering from the football of late and rocket was a disaster - bolted and flowered so pulled it out and have started some more in the green house. Apart from that everything else is doing well.

Finally planted into raised beds

...and what happens it hails! Swede have come off worst, not sure whether they will recover. Lettuce are a bit tatty but will survive. On the positive side, carrots and onions looking good and I have begun to harvest some radishes.

Something has eaten my rocket, never seem to have much success with rocket - don't even like it!

Still in the green house

Still in the green house
In other years would have planted this lot out by now but the weather has been awful and its due to get colder.

Swede has germinated and is doing well but don't fancy my chances with the celeriac - used old seed, maybe as old as five years. Hope the weather turns soon, don't want to have start repotting this lot.

Chilli plants aren't doing too well - just not enough sun

Celeriac, Sweed and more salad

Celeriac, Sweed and more salad
For the first summer ever I am attempting to have a constant supply of lettuce without having too much at any given time.

Normally sow a row or two all at once and the majority start going to seed because we don't get through them quick enough. So this year sowing a variety in 5 small pots every two weeks.

I sowed some Celeriac and Swede last weekend. Sowed them in peat pots as root veg doesn't like being transplanted. They are in the green house for now but will be planted out in the bed in their little peat pots later. The pots will disintegrate and the plants will never know.

In the picture from left to right, 2 celeriac and 3 swede (in the peat pots), Lollo Rosso lettuce (just germinated), Rocket (I'll remove all but the strongest seedling in due course), and finally on the right Cos Lettuce.

First repotting for tomatoes

First repotting for tomatoes
My moneymaker tomatoes roots were beginning to show through the bottom of the small pots I sowed them in, so it was time to move them to larger accommodation.

Only growing 4 plants this year (plus 1 beefsteak variety), these were sown at the beginning of March, a full month earlier than last year, in the hope that I'll be able to harvest something before then end of July.

Worried about my little gems

Planted out my little gem lettuces on Saturday and then we had a pretty heavy frost on Monday morning. Hope they survive the shock of being transfered from the luxury of the green house to the raised bed.

Note to self, be patient and check the weather forecast
