Soil facts and preparation

  • Ideal Ph range 6.0 to 8.0

Moisture retaining soil, free from large stones and out of the full glare of the sun is ideal. Do not manure within a year of sowing, as with most root vegetables. Daikon will grow best in fertile crumbly soil. Note do not plant where Brassicas (Broccoli, Cauliflower etc) have been grown in the past two years.

Sow thinly and as the seedlings appear thin weeker seedling periodically to an eventual spacing of about 25cm. Do not attempt to transplant seedlings. You can create rows in small trenches to aid earthing up as roots grow

Growing a bumper crop

Soil must be kept, do not over water as this may cause the roots to split as the plant matures. Earth up the roots as they grow to just below the plant stem. Take care when when weeding as damaging the roots can entice pests and diseases

Harvesting the fruits of your labour

Harvest as required when the roots are about 25cm long. Dig up the root gently with a fork and lift. Roots can be stored for up to 2 months in a cool dry place. Pack in boxes of sand to reduce the risk of perishing.
