This variety of garlic is quick to mature and produces large purple bulbs. Remove the curled flower stalks to increase bulb size but don't throw away, chopped they can add a mild garlic flavour to salads and stir frys. Being a hard-neck variety of garlic, Early Purple Wight does not store well. Use soon after lifting, do not keep for more than 3 months.
Solent Wight is a soft neck variety of garlic and is well known for its flavour and smell. Favoured by cooks for strength and depth of flavour as well as its great storing properties. The bulbs are easy to plait and stored in a cool dry place will keep for many months. Bulbs are white, large and dense, plants grow to a height of 60cm and should be placed at least 20cm apart. Well suited to cooler temperate climates such as that of the UK where it is very popular
